Timer Resolution 1.2 is a tiny free utility for Windows by Lucas Hale that shows and changes the resolution of the Windows system timer. Gamers download Timer Resolution to make the system react faster and to reduce input lag and stutter in games, especially on older setups.
Windows runs many tasks on a timer that ticks at a set interval. Programs can ask for a finer interval, and games and media players often do, because a finer timer lets the system wake up threads, process input and schedule frames more precisely. Timer Resolution shows the current, minimum and maximum values and lets you request the finest one with a single button, keeping it active while the tool is open. The main audience is competitive players who chase smoother frame pacing and lower input delay, people tuning older PCs for games, and enthusiasts who test the effect with benchmarks. Some audio producers use it too, when a system has trouble with timing. For ordinary office work or browsing there is no benefit, and a finer timer may slightly raise power use on laptops, so it is not something every user should leave running. Recent Windows versions changed how timer requests from different programs combine, so the effect varies: measure before and after instead of relying on impressions.
The developer's FAQ says the tool is compatible with all modern Windows versions, including Windows 11, 10, 7 and XP. The file is extremely small, about 6.50 KB according to catalogue data, and needs no extra runtimes.
The tool only asks Windows for a different timer setting through a standard system call; it does not modify system files, and the change disappears when you close it or restart. Because the file is so small and popular, repackaged copies with other executables appear on download sites, so use the official pages only.
Timer Resolution is freeware: no payment, no registration.
